I'm wondering if the sunbelt spike will look different this year. Seems like most of us (at least where I live) who are unvaccinated have already contracted Covid. They can blame the low vaccination rates as much as they want, but look at Portugal or the U.K. vs. India. Unfortunately none of our U.S. states has a low enough vax rate (I suspect) to provide a true control group. With that said if you look at the current dashboard of case rates by state a pattern shows up and I am curious to see whether it's merely seasonality leading to the highest vaccinated states having the most cases. Time will tell.

In any natural pandemic, you expect each 'wave' to be smaller than the one before it because fewer people remain susceptible.

How this interacts with fading (or useless) vaccine protection will be the deciding factor.

"fewer people remain susceptible" - And the most vulnerable leave the pool. Some assisted by medical help. Intubation replaces blood letting, Remdesivir replaces arsenic. All following CDC guidelines that replace clinical judgement.

Our response also put a lot of people IN the vulnerable pool who weren't there in 2020 :(

And yet did i see Philadelphia reinstating indoor mask mandates? 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Indeed they did. It will be (another) great example of mandates not doing anything.

And the funniest part is that they won’t be enforcing it until April 18th. Bad enough to need it, but let’s wait a week before we do so. Makes total sense.

I wonder if masking and vaccine cards will return as mandatory measures for your upcoming election?

Could easily go like this: week before the elections, on friday afternoon at 16:30 Biden's White House announces due to spiking numbers of cases of a new dangerous strain, masking and vaccination cards must be in effect at all voting stations, by presidential decree.

This will of course be challenged and in all probability brought down, but not until after elections are over.

Now imagine how the White House and crony organisations to the the Democrats and party loyal media and plutocrats (Bezos, Gates, Zuckerberg, Koch and so on) will sound like if Republicans call for the election to be held again, only without mandates.

The White House could easily string such a row along for some time, until it's time for presidential elections again, upon which the whole thing will be quietly forgotten.

"NIAID director now batting .006"

That's still SO far below the Mendoza line that not even a streak to match Jolting Joe DiMaggio's 56 games could save Mr. Fauci from deserving a cactus league assignment.

If we counted batting average the way we do slugging percentage, except subtracting a hit for every time the batter hit into a double play, and two hits for every time he hit into a triple play,

I believe this “flatten the curve” is on our side now. 30 days to flatten the curve. I.e. 30-60 days now to flatline any so-called jab “protection. I wonder if fairly soon we WILL be saying “15 days to flatten the curve”. The time length keeps shortening. Hmmmm . I believe several PhDs and MDs on our side predicted that.

Which leads me to my fave headline of the day: “COVID could be surging in the US right now and we might not even know it”

They are terrified by the idea that we might occasionally get sick and not report it to the feds.

They've gotta ramp up JUST enough fear to lock in those mail-in voting rules, then they can quietly change how we count hospitalizations and deaths. (If they don't, they'll be looking at ANOTHER failure to stop the winter wave)

The D problem is that they've completely convinced a fairly large section of their voter base that covid is the scariest thing ever AND that the rules were what was holding the virus back. Those voters are coming at the 'leaders' from the other side so NOBODY is happy.

One would hope that even the 'Karens' would wake up from their stupor.

It's not a stupor. It's a delusion. What we've done is to turn fear into a virtue, and the Karens believe they are better, more virtuous people than we are.

Some people must stay home to make Karen feel safe. Others must go to work to make Karen feel comfortable. If you disagree, Karen calls you selfish.

I don't mind being called selfish. Pursuit of self-interest, within a reasonable moral framework, is no vice.

LOL yes, angry white women who ask to speak to the manager for everything are definitely 'caring'.

And of course I've never heard that before because it's not a thing. $10 to the charity of your choice if you show a credible link.

Edit: Nothing at all to do with caring.

https://www.vox.com/2020/2/5/21079162/karen-name-insult-meme-manager

f your name is Karen, Becky, or Chad, you may have noticed a growing trend of people using your name as an insult. Increasingly, “Karen” in particular has emerged as the frontrunner for the average “basic white person name” — a pejorative catchall label for a wide range of behaviors thought to have connections to white privilege. And the recently trending Twitter hashtag #AndThenKarenSnapped has further shifted the “Karen” meme from its nebulous origins toward becoming a mainstream trope.

I've heard UnMasks are good if you want to fly but masks dampen the joy.

Yeah don’t wear one. Don’t bring one. If they ask you to put one one, make them give you one. Then decide how long you want to wear it.

Me too. I've been in the sunny(!) English countryside for a couple weeks, since Ireland and the UK dropped the "show me your papers" nonsense. Supposed to return home to rural Maskachusetts next week, but I will not participate in the testing nonsense. Anyone know if that is scheduled to end soon? May have to extend my ticket.

Great piece, Commander, thank you!

No idea, sorry. They’re 6 days out from the expiration of the mask mandate with no word. I’d look into finding out if there’s an expiration date for the testing.

As are many. It’s to the point that there are definitely more people that are choosing not to fly because of the masks, than people that won’t fly if the masks become optional. They’re always welcome to continue to wear them if they want.

So let's say there is a total GOP wipeout of Democrats in Nov. Considering what a useless bunch of morons they, too have almost entirely been through several administration changes now, what do you propose can realistically be done to ensure this can never be done to us again barring WEP stormtroopers arriving in pontoon boats on our shores?

That truth and justice thingy needs some muscle behind it, guys.

Nothing can be worse than that, god forbid the people who have spent their time whinging about how they just had to arrest peaceful protesters in 2000-whatever continuing to make us tunnel down with them. Republicans need to recruit and support political candidates who are not morons and who can reasonably be supported by someone like me, a registered independent who voted for "none of the above" in 2016 and stayed home in 2020. A candidate whose personal religious values stay in his or her home, and who fights for the secular Republic our extremely rational Founders created for us.

I myself did not value the Second Amendment until our Plague Era hit, and if I, a born and raised Noo Yawkuh, have come to see its value, then there is a broader constituency than Republicans seem to understand. I myself, who does not see marriage as a sacrament, nevertheless believe that it has a specific meaning in society and that civil partnerships are appropriate for same-sex couples.

Appeal to me and you got a winning argument. I am, perhaps, legion. Try and find out.

Sorry. A convenient target, particularly since Klaus imagines he is a king. I suspect as we awaken, we unruly people are not under that spell. Of course, I'm among like minded friends on these stacks, but the public at large is becoming aware that things just aren't right. Funny how $5+ gas affects you and your behavior. Most refuse to accept that they voted for the people that misused the pandemic but they will seek to find some new people.

I've noticed there's a lot of readership crossover amongst likeminded Substacks. What if--just musing here--we all really did find some concurrence on a first day of action--no ATM withdrawals, or a day without texting--someone come up with something people can do easily, wherever they are, and perhaps invite one person in their non-online community to do it with them--and see if it has any even minor effect at all?

And let's say it was enough to make even one bank briefly notice, or one carrier. And then we keep going.

I know, just crazy talk here. But what if?
