(Note for new subscribers: Normally on Monday, I recap some of the positive stories/funny memes I’ve come across in the last week. Because of the holiday this week, the feature runs on Tuesday instead! Feel free to add your own in the comments!)
Screamers, it’s not MY fault you’ve got to head back to work after a long holiday weekend. Get that frown off your face and celebrate the short work week!
Speaking of short things, here’s a (then) new addition to the Oregon Zoo:
Good things do come in small packages!
I know when you woke up, you were wondering “What would happen if you dropped a superheated ball into a jar of aloe vera gel?”
Now you know.
Last week I relayed the story of Salvador Perez stopping by a local whiffle ball game (then later having a friend drop by an autographed bat). Update — One of the kids’ dads created this awesome poster so the field has some proper signage! Awesome!
Chipmunk: What ya got there?
Human: It’s an almond.
Chipmunk: I’ve never had an almond. Let me just…….
……..take them all, thank you!
I feel this English “lesson” in my bones:
When one duckling goes down the falls, there’s only one thing to do!
What do you want to bet his siblings convinced him to “fall” so they could jump, too?
It’s now officially September, which means expanded rosters and minor-league call-ups. Long-time readers know I’m a sucker for a good Major League debut, and this one is amazing.
In game 5 of the 2002 World Series, Darren Baker was involved in the greatest non-baseball play during a baseball play that I’ve ever seen. Darren was San Francisco Giants manager Dusty Bakers son, and he was the team’s batboy.
As the home team was on their way to a 16-4 victory, Baker was a little too enthusiastic in chasing down a bat. An alert JT Snow recognized the situation and scooped little Baker up as he crossed home plate:
On Sunday, “little” Darren Baker was called up to the big leagues — and singled on the first pitch he saw, with dad in attendance!
Not bad for somebody who nearly suffered an on-field, career-ending collision 22 years ago!
Among all types of feline, one cat stands out as being especially awesome — the beach cat.
Every beach cat I’ve met has been immediately friendly and affectionate!
I guess I can’t close this out without some content for the dog lovers, too. Here we see the ferocious canine channeling his ancient instinct to secure food:
Whoops.
That’s what I found this week, Screamers! You know the deal by now — share what made you happy in the comments below! Let’s get this short week off to a great start!

Cindi sent me this picture of her pup Nisa, but I didn’t see it in time to add it to last week’s National Dog Day post. Enjoy!
Awesome videos!! Animals are endlessly fascinating, especially the babies!! 😍
Here's what made me happy this week: I live in a very, very small town (actually not "in" the town, a couple of miles down the road from "the intersection"). Driving up to the grocery store, there were American flags in front of every house and every business. The businesses with longer storefronts had multiple flags. I smiled and smiled and thanked God I live here, with normal people. If you hear a siren, you're worried about your neighbors. My mailbox was broken and three people offered to fix it. Everybody has a gun and knows how to use it. Nobody cares if you can hear loud-ass music in the distance at 3am. I LOVE IT!! ❤❤❤
Ahhh baseball, can’t beat it ! Americana! I don’t see one trans .
