Institutional censorship has been accelerated by self-censorship. Too many people were scared to exercise their free speech rights, whether on campus, at work, online, even with friends, and this created the illusion of an accepted consensus deserving of enforcement. It's good we're finding our voice more and more, but I worry it might be too late.

It's called political correctness and it's wrong.

"The tyrants are tightening their grip".

Yes, they are. And we think things are fine because we don't have to wear masks....see how that works?

"....see how that works?"

And then realize how long "that" strategy has been working for tyrants and the tyrant-hearted.

Unfortunately, I do.

Free speech is an illusion, since the concept assumes a homogenous culture, else it won't work.

Example: advocating legalisation of marriage at age 9 would be within the parameters' of the US definition of free speech, yes? Yet pedophilia and child brides are abhorrent to all western cultures, but not to several arabic/moslem or african ones.

So do migrants from different cultures to ours (general westrn) argue their cultural, social and religious values? Should they be allowed to work politically to enact sharia?

Simply put, is it free speech if some of the sheep are advocating giving the wolf asylum in the pasture? Because in any democracy, especially one not keeping the culture and race homogenous, what the majority votes for becomes what is morally and legally right, at first and the in two generations what is morally and legally compulsory and mandatory.

Now look at rates of reproduction for different races. Do the math, and realise that while yes, /our/ civil rights do work and are good, they are so only and because they are ours alone, and our nations not shared with the billions of the Orient and Africa. It is to accomodate islamic states, rulers and businesses, and to appease China, that measures such as these are being undertaken.

And that our rulers, heady with power, thinks emulating the most backwards races and cultures are a good thing.

Thank the gods I am in a country where I had antecedents who actually were a part of the whole beginning. I had an interesting childhood on my mother's side. I saw the battlefields of the revolution and told of my ancestor's contribution. There's no way these idiots eff this up, my job is to fight for this place. I pray the spirit is alive and kicking among the others here.

The chilling implication of the DGB is enough, especially since they've given no information about their actual scope and activities- only half-assed assurances that they won't violate the rights of Americans. Nobody knows for sure what they'll be doing and how they'll be doing it, so just the announcement of its existence will chill some speech.

Anyone who thinks this will remain a benign, powerless advisory committee is a fool. We're still walking though xray scanners at airports 20 years later.

Great read.

Feeling the walls closing in for the USA, but seems in Canada they’ve already collapsed on the people.

Expand full comment

Yep sure feels that way. Had to tell my step Mom today that I wouldn’t be able to make it to my Dads funeral…it’s on the opposite end of the country and would take a week to drive (one way) Flying is not an option. People can’t visit family, can’t (air or train) travel for business…this is what they’re doing to Canada’s people.

Wow so unreal. And I wouldn’t fly because of masks… seems trivial when compared to that.

Sorry for your loss of father and freedom.

Thank you 🙏

I am sorry. I couldn't make my father's either, had to watch it on Zoom. Seriously this has been a gratuitous exercise of power by government not warranted by this so called epidemic which only requires EARLY AT HOME TREATMENT. I will NEVER forgive my government for doing this. Never.

Sorry about your loss as well. They’re doing their best to keep people apart, to cause division, to stop us from sharing ideas and keeping our world small. We can’t let them win that game- we have to keep love in our hearts, keep sharing our light and truth and stories. And staying connected to like minded folks like here on the beautiful Substack community

Every country on earth has some form of state "security" apparatus. And in every country in the world, those agencies tend abuse the 'powers' granted to them by their governments. Until the government becomes the abuser. In the US, the government locked up hundreds of citizens for over a year, (Jan 06), without charges. For "crimes" which, should they ever be charged, would be mere misdemeanors. That would be the same government that has just created an Orwellian "Ministry of Truth". Last winter, the Canadian government declared bouncy castles and prayer meetings a danger to the realm. And found that they could, with absolutely no legal basis, and in contravention of the Canadian Bill of Rights, seize property and freeze citizens' bank accounts. (That's after imported goon squads worked over a few 'demonstrators' with riot sticks and rifle butts). Now they are considering European style censorship of online venues. Our rulers are simply advancing, step-by-step, through a well thought out transition to totalitarianism. Our basic freedoms - freedoms of religion, movement, association, and assembly are being severely limited - we lose a little more each day. And the greatest freedom of all, our freedom of speech, has just been rescinded.

Damn well said. Thank you, M. AndyinBC.

Reagan said freedom is always one generation from extinction. It must be defended constantly or it's gone. Tyranny is more profitable than liberty.

Free speech is only tolerated by competent people, and we're breeding competence out of our population. Speech is already being attacked on the new "truth" social. Deace sent his first post today (what will they call them?) that trans is demonic. It was immediately "flagged" as unacceptable. Maybe Trump copied his algos from twit, or maybe he's just still hiring disloyal sabateurs. But people everywhere are being trained to avoid speech they dislike. Even on substack we have pussies banning posters that disagree with them. All the banners are probably arranging their neutering. It's a global epidemic of safe space fetishers.

i hope there will be a tipping point and countries will get mad enough to riot like the UK did back in the early 90s, but they are doing this just slowly enough and with just enough people believing the media that i doubt it'll happen anymore.

the people are soft and weak

Best bet would be to burn down the internet, wouldn't require too many to achieve total blackout by targeting exchanges ;)

Hmm..I've heard similar, but don't have enough expertise to know if it's possible.

M. Ray, maybe tyou can tell me: would a so-called EMP sufficiently large (let's say "military grade"?) take down the internet?

Expand full comment

it would but it would be regional. really we would need people in most towns and cities vandalising the whole system, it would take years to put back together and then they would have to add in a tonne of security, it would become prohibitive as we could still inflict harm during the rebuild. im happy to be a luddite except i'd miss substack!

Heads up: Substack is having major email issues today, so it's extremely likely you won't get notifications as normal to comments and will have to check in manually.

OMG, I just had an awful thought. What if they do this to Substack?

I don't see how Substack can stop it TBH. That's why I export my list multiple times a week. Substack can disappear but we can still get mails out until we land somewhere else.
