I for one have hated politics my whole life, viewed it as a dirty job, something that is in a way predatory on the rest of us but that's because of how bad our leaders have become. I myself have looked into running for office once I retire not b/c I want to but b/c I feel that if more every day avg people don't, then the sociopaths, psychopaths and power hungry elite will continue to do it for us and in a way the benefits them.

If you decide to do this, you'll quickly find politics is even more disgusting than you could have imagined.

Still, it's a good idea.

I hope I never grow to like/enjoy it for that's a dangerous path.

"If I were in charge of fixing this, the first thing I would do is resign."

President George Washington was a great leader because not only did he not want to be resident yet again but he did so despite pressure from others for him to do it again, to effectively be a king.

"If I were in charge of fixing this, the first thing I would do is resign.": do you mean you don't want to be president?

People who want power are often, not always but often, the ones you don't want getting said power. Obviously someone needs to do it but the ideal person is one doing it reluctantly and not one who eagerly awaits being able to use said power.

Being president also paints a target on your back as well as your family members even after you're no longer president.

Not even a little!

Ironically, this makes me better suited to the job than almost all politicians.

NeverForget1776's avatar

Yep. The reluctant man is the right one for the lead because he doesn't seek power for powers sake but is doing what he feels is a duty. Just like no normal person should want to go to war just is wiling to when the need arises

Love this idea! ♥️♥️♥️

Memorial Day, like most other holidays, is political. It didn't become a Federal holiday until 1967. Prior to that, Memorial Day or Decoration Day was celebrated by individual states, with Southern states having decoration day for Confederate deaths. The day was to remember the time when politicians put down their pens and went to war. In 1971 Congress came up with a plan to give Federal workers three-day holidays and changed the dates to Mondays. Then without really making a change, instead of day to remember war dead, it became another veterans day to make veterans feel good. Why? Dead people can't vote.

And this is why we love the Commander!

Disappointing baseball.....??

Depends on your point of view.

I nominate you to be in charge of making this happen. It’s a glorious idea and could help make the country more appreciative of the blessings we enjoy!

Unfortunately quite a few of these wars could have been avoided, if the American govt had not wanted to rule the world. Why go to Vietnam? Why go to Iraq, Iran, the Middle East as a whole? Why fight in Africa? American Army should be at home, to protect THIS country - not fight in every war that is going on. If I were a young person I would not enlist, and if called upon, I would leave this warmongering country. Yes, it is un-patriotic. But fighting someone else's war is not patriotic, either, and it would have saved a lot of death, harm, heartbreak.

Completely agree. I like much of what Trump has done during his second term in office, but I am very disappointed that he has chosen to involve us in even more and bigger wars that we were already fostering. As you said, there is a significant list of reasons for not participating in foreign wars, let alone starting more of them.

What a great idea. Several years ago (during Covid) I left my lawn flags up from Memorial Day through July 4th and have kept that my tradition going to this day

Great minds think alike SC

SC, we have "MONTHS" for certain other things... more than I can count. Your idea is exactly correct. Of course some people will go nuts deciding who should be remembered "most" but those are the same people who would not want this holiday unless it only glorified people who would likely never join.

SimulationCommander's avatar

I think the military would have quite the "competition" to feature the most badass soldiers, too.

Melissa Fountain's avatar

INDEED! But what fun. Every "competitor" would be formidable.

SimulationCommander's avatar

That's the type of internal competition that keeps everybody on the top of their game!

I dig it. That's a really good idea.

How is it that we have Memorial Day and then Pride MONTH!? Gross!

SimulationCommander's avatar

That had a non-zero impact on my reasoning.

Not a bad idea as such.

(Insert various -isms here, screaming about militaristic jingoism and the usual outrage-terms here.)

Running with your initial premise, including something about "to try to achieve stable peace is very difficult and expensive" and the go on to explain what the actual options facing the decision-makers at the were.

This in order to avoid Hollywood-history, where real-politik decisions via entertainment-propaganda become moral crusades against evil - because that does lead straight into warmongering jingoism, whereas knowing the stark reality (cynical or idealistic) leads to grounded sober and sombre thinking where restrain in using force become a virtue, without turning the use of foorce into something intrisically bad.

One of the best examples, and least politically controversial in the present, ought to be Wilson deciding to throw the USA into what became known as World War One.

And the various US missions to North African coastal states in the 19th century is also a good point to teach in equal measures remembrance and respect, as cautionary tales of the cost and consequences of let's call it meddling, just for short.

And getting rid of Pride-month and Negro history-month would be a good idea too I'd argue, to be replaced with American History Month, starting with the various hypotheses of how humans came to the Americas, and ending with the issue of illegal and legal migration (keepping it age-appropriate dep. on class of course).

I needed puppies and Cat-antics today.

Whining is a choice, and I'm here on a Monday.

I tried to use an online search tool provided by and touted as part of the new VA web services:

Find your Veteran

Visit the Veteran Legacy Memorial to find your Veteran and share tributes, images, and more to their memorial profile page.

My grandfather is not listed, but...

He's buried at Arlington and I've knelt at his marker, and placed flowers and tributes.

Prayers to those whose Vets don't have a final resting place, who made the ultimate sacrifice and served us all and didn't come home.

Peace be with you.

My father isn’t listed either. I’m looking to see if we can add names. Great source! Thank you!

Another idea, bring veterens into school class to talk about their experiences so much written or on line information is not read or is untrue..

SimulationCommander's avatar

This would be perfect for the Veteran's Day version of this that would run through Thanksgiving...
