While the protestors up north get all the headlines, protestors in Minneapolis hit the streets on Friday protesting against the police shooting of Amir Locke, who was shot during a dangerous early-morning raid similar to the one that killed Breonna Taylor.
According to Fox 9 Minneapolis, around 50 to 100 protesters marched throughout the city and gathered outside the Minneapolis Police Department's fifth precinct and stopped traffic. The protest began around 9 p.m. Some were caught on video that circulated on social media throwing objects throw windows and causing other property damage.
Various photos and videos from the event show protesters using spray paint on businesses and other buildings throughout the protest route, including "Amir Locke," "Winston Smith" and "Destroy MPD."
Note the incredible lack of similar videos for the Freedom Convoy. If these dangerous insurrectionists are illegally protesting, shouldn’t it be easy to prove it?
Locke’s death was an unnecessary tragedy. It’s long past time to end no-knock raids, and this is an issue worth protesting! But smashing windows and spray painting businesses doesn’t help the cause, it hurts the cause! Before the George Floyd riots, the police reform movement was in a powerful position. We were discussing body cameras, reform of qualified immunity, and even public police reform! It was all on the table! But in one summer of property damage and violence, all that hard work evaporated and we ended up (at best) right back where we started.
Biden’s reaction to this will be interesting. Will he be able to thread the needle — threatening one group of protestors while siding with a different, more violent group of protestors? And more importantly, will we finally get some movement on the Justice for Breonna Taylor Act?
Haha - threading the needle? Brandon can’t string scripted words together coherently. To balance these polar opposite groups would require someone with strong leadership skills, a demonstrated understanding of the issues and respect from both sides. Wishful thinking that JB could do that, but keep wishing…sometimes dreams do come true! 😉
I would be careful here. No knock warrants should be difficult to obtain, not impossible. Some are granted due to security concerns for hostages. As for qualified immunity, it is afforded to all public employees, not just law enforcement. The category of employee that uses qualified immunity the most is teachers. It's one of many reasons that school performance peaked in 1969 and then began a slow but steady descent into hell, concurrent with the National Education Association converting from an advocacy group for professional educators to a labor union.
Why single out police as the only people who are stripped of qualified immunity? One horrible teacher is positioned to do a lot more harm than an apartment full of trigger-happy cops.
