Tuesday afternoon and just home from work:

Cutting, cleaving and stacking firewood for my mom so she'll be set for Winter.

But positive things? Well, it's Spring for real, though you'd be excused for thinking otherwise. On the one hand, many flowers are flowering already, such as vitsippor (European thimbleweed) and tussilago (coltsfoot) and the bears are out in force.

On the other hand, a few nights ago it was seven below freeing and yesterday afternoon there was hailstorm and a thunderstorm at the same time.

On the third hand, Thursday last week the wife applied for a job in the next county. Same afternoon they call and ask her to start Monday. That's real good.

And got my tax return info: the eq. of $80 in returns. Golly shucks, we gonna eat meat once a week now! Nah, I'm kidding, we're not that poor.

The chickens are laying half a dozen eggs per day, the ole' dog has perked up since Winter, everything's turning green and life's overall pretty darn good.

Just wanted to share a bit of good mood and general sense of cheer, so there!

Three total! Spunky is the big puppy, Blue is the smaller adolescent, and Sadie is the old lady. Sadie doesn't get much "love" because she doesn't ham it up for the camera, she just wants to go for walks!

Came by this a few minutes ago: "A rule [in Washington, D.C., circa 1910], which no one nowadays seems very desirous of fathering, but nevertheless a rule of long standing, states that when a department chief enters an elevator in any of the department buildings it must carry him without other stops to his floor. The other passengers in the car must wait the time and the will of the chief, no matter how urgent may be their errands or how short the time at their command. A gradual increase of this silly rule has made it include many assistants, sub-chiefs and assistants to sub-chiefs. Only the elevator man knows the rank at which a government employé becomes entitled to this peculiar privilege."

We had a Sadie! She was a curly, black Cocker Spaniel that we bought for $100 at a rummage sale. A RUMMAGE sale! Their 3 kids wouldn't play with her, she was rarely interacted with, she lived in her cage, in the garage. She was 2. She LIVED in her CAGE in the GARAGE. Away from the family. SHE was 2 YEARS old! It still makes me cry to think about that. The dad said her name was Mercedes, because she was "the only black Mercedes I'll ever own." We figured that would be true for us, too, but we just called her, Sadie. She wasn't mean or anything, but she was offish, because she had had so little human interaction. When you would hold her and pet her, when she'd jump down, she'd be so happy she'd wiggle all over, get the zoomies, and grin ear to ear. She got ovarian cancer, we didn't know about it until too late, and died. I still miss her and feel bad for her original life, but she seemed happy with us and our other dogs.

My husband's wolf, Peter came from a similar background. He had been brought home by a travelling relative. When the relative moved on he left Peter in a dog run in the back and never returned for him. 4 or 5 years later, my husband was at a party at the house and spent the evening with Peter. He asked about him and was told that he family was thinking of putting him down, as a wolf was too scary for the parents and the kids (teenagers) in the family didn't pay attention to him. My husband went back, talked to his roommates and came back a few days later for Peter. Peter lived another 8 years with my husband (and later me). He was a good doggy and I'm glad he had a good life in the end. I'm glad Sadie had a similar story. :)

Bandit's avatar

I'm so happy that Peter got rescued, too. Humans can be so uncaring. It's pretty scary, honestly. They all deserve good lives. Bless you both for caring for Peter. 😊

baker charlie's avatar

And Sadie!

We are humans doing the best we can. I admit I was gifted my crazy chihuahua (albeit larger than standard)- and even he is possibly a rescue even though my friend paid for him. My wonderful cats are rescues. We do what we can, so far the returns have been far greater than even the emotional ravages in the end. It hurts to have a cat end at 17, or a dog at 15. but it is what it is.

Expand full comment
Bandit's avatar

>Nodding< It doesn't matter how you get them. It only matters that they're cared for and loved. It ravages your heart, no matter what age they leave you, or how they go. Like you said, "It is what it is."

Always enjoy them and love them while they're here. Even the cantankerous ones are angels.

Amen.

I have a non-standard purebred dog, a Maine coon with no papers and a barn mutt cat that always comes home and sleeps every few days. I love them all and miss sleep when they are ill or unaccounted for. But the love and the confidence they see in me is humbling at times. I pray I can always be the person they think I am.

When we were a young married couple, there was a dog across the backyard fence who just about broke my heart. In the two years we lived in that house, we only saw someone interact with him twice, both times to refill his water bowl. He invented a game for himself in which he took a ball to the top of the slope in the backyard, dropped it and waited until it was almost to the bottom and then race to grab it before it hit the fence. He would do this over and over. Our dogs would get excited and trot (they were old dogs 😂) along our fenceline, following the ball.

To be fair, since we never saw lights on in the house, nor anyone outside except those two times to fill the water bowl, it is entirely possible that whomever lived there worked the night shift somewhere and did play with the dog when the rest of the world was asleep.

I hope you're right about working nights. Dogs deserve so much love.

We had a little red Cocker Spaniel, Jessica, who would go to the top of the stairs and throw her ball down. Watching it bounce most of the way, before tearing down the steps to retrieve it at the bottom. Yes, we did play with her, including throwing the ball down the stairs for her. She just loved that game very much! We had a total of 5 Cocker Spaniels over the years, so there's lots of Cocker stories. Great memories.

Just visited Phoenix for some skin biopsies. One on my eyelid caused me not to trust the oafs in New Mexico to do anything. Now I have to go back for the actual surgeries. Anyway, Phoenix was beautiful. They have some kind of tree with yellow blossoms that is planted all over the city. The bougainvillea was in full glorious bloom as well. Flowers in parking lots!! Even the sketchier areas we went through were clean and had those trees. What a difference compared with New Mexico. Particulate matter in the air in Northern NM yesterday registered 138 - unhealthy - ya think?
