In her latest post, Naomi Wolf elegantly talks about the Second Amendment and why it’s the lynchpin keeping us free. The entire thing is great, but this part REALLY jumped out at me:
When the government can decide what is acceptable speech, political dissent is quickly outlawed. This is why it’s so vital that places like Substack continue to allow free speech for all, and why it’s vital that we have people willing to shout uncomfortable truths from the mountaintops.
Now this is interesting. Your article is the third one I’ve encountered in the space of only a few minutes, where reference is being made to the power of words, both spoken and written. Your closing statement “ it’s vital that we have people willing to shout uncomfortable truths from the top of the mountaintops” may be of greater importance than we even fully realize In this battle of the ages between good and evil. Thank you for your words and voice.
A pen (figuratively speaking in the age of computers) is only powerful as a weapon, if the writer is willing to defend with armed weapons the right to speak. Writers write in solitary but those voices, like rocks in a pond, have far reaching impacts. The Second Amendment protects the First Amendment. If we lose the Second, the First will be close behind.
