I really wish I had more time to write today, but this really can’t wait until tomorrow. The Department of Homeland Security is setting up (or has already set up) a Disinformation Governance Board to handle (for now) dangerous disinformation coming from Russia — like maybe how we have biolabs in Ukraine.
Homeland Security described the board’s expansive duties, saying it will combat the wide swath of disinformation. In the immediate term, its focus will be on disinformation surrounding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and on the messaging smuggling groups are peddling to would-be illegal immigrants, the department said.
Mr. Mayorkas also suggested it will deal with election information.
OF COURSE the DGB will handle election information! Can you think of a more trustworthy entity than the United States Government? Obviously the same people who have lied repeatedly about covid, the Whitmer kidnapping plot, Russiagate, and most of all about Donald Trump, THOSE people should be able to get you tossed off of social media — or worse.
This is the desperate move of an administration that knows it would get pummeled in a fair and free mid-term election. They can’t handle the truth, so the truth must be buried.
And the clown nose on top of the whole thing? The DBG is led by Nina Jankowicz, who was completely on board with Hunter’s laptop being disinformation — despite how easy it was to confirm.
Ms. Jankowicz has been a fellow at the Wilson Center, working on Russian propaganda efforts. She has also been an adviser to Ukraine.
In 2020, as explosive reports of President Biden’s son’s laptop roiled the presidential campaign, Ms. Jankowicz told The New York Daily News she thought it was disinformation spread by the Trump campaign.
New reporting by several news organizations has since substantiated the authenticity of the laptop, which was first reported by The New York Post.
This is the worst development for liberty since the USA PATRIOT Act (at least). It won’t take long for the DGB’s mission to ‘expand’ into every aspect of online (and offline) speech. It seems that in the face of Elon Musk threatening to reveal the rot of Twitter, the government has simply decided to dispense with the ‘private company’ illusion altogether.
The real question is, what are we all going to do about this? Time to start a concerted letter writing campaign to our elected representatives? Get Veritas or DW or someone to launch an exposure/counteroffensive campaign? This seems more important than just whining on Substack at which many of us are very good. Suggestions?
This is how the government gets around the First Amendment -- “no, we’re not banning speech we don’t like, we’re just ‘suggesting’ that private companies might want to ban speech we don’t like”.
Left unstated is if that those suggestions are ignored, you can expect to be in the crosshairs of the FBI, SEC, DHS, etc.
