It seems inevitable that Republicans will clean up in the 2022 midterms, as the first chunk of the Biden presidency can be accurately described as a dumpster fire of monkey shit floating on a chunky sea of word vomit spewed from our lying media presstitutes. (Totally off topic: Congrats to Jen Psfactchecker on her new gig!)
And while not being in the president’s party may be enough to win midterm elections, it’s certainly not enough to reverse the perilous situation in which small-government libertarians find ourselves. Free speech is under attack from multiple angles, but most dangerously from the unholy alliance between government and media companies — including the social variety. We’re still coming out from year three of unprecedented covid restrictions, despite the complete failure of said restrictions to control the virus. Overwhelmingly these restrictions (and emergency powers) weren’t even properly passed via state legislatures — an attack on our democracy Republic if ever there was one. Government spending is overheating the presses and leading to massive inflation — if not the end to the dollar as the reserve currency of the world — and the only idea the ‘leaders’ have is to print and spend more. Dire straights, indeed.
However, looking up and down the 2024 GOP lineup, the sad truth is that freedom-loving ‘public servants’ are few and far between. Rand Paul took Tony Fauci out to the woodshed a couple times, but Fauci keeps spewing lies on TV and getting paid for it. Ron DeSantis ‘followed the science’ better than nearly all governors, but (to my certainly imperfect knowledge) Kristi Noem was the only governor who (correctly) proclaimed to not have the power to close your business. Ron Johnson has been holding covid hearings and allowing ignored voices to be heard. And…….that’s everybody?
And realistically, even the people I mentioned — the ‘best’ of the GOP — don’t really have a freedom-first mindset. Over time this creates a huge problem, as generally “both sides” agree that government should be DOING MORE. And while this works out great for government officials and their families, regular people are stuck paying the bill for the trillions of dollars rained down on the politically connected — who proclaim the only way to fix this problem is with government DOING MORE…..
You saw this a lot when the GOP was struggling to repeal Obamacare, because they didn’t have anything to ‘replace’ it with. And the GOP being the GOP, they couldn’t simply ‘replace’ it with a patient giving money to the doctor for services rendered like every successful industry in the country. They couldn’t simply repeal Certificate of Need laws and remove the artificial cap on the number of people who can become doctors every year. Where’s the payoff in that? So here we are, years later, with a crappy system nobody but the insurance companies like. And didn’t we all want to GET the insurance companies? Weren’t we protesting the fact that their product was crappy and cost to much? Weird how once they got intertwined with government, they ended up winning, isn’t it?
I wish I knew the answer to this problem. Because, as we will see in 2022, simply not being Joe Biden isn’t enough. We need strong leaders who understand and can explain WHY freedom is a better idea than shoveling money hand-over-fist to the politicians who keep lighting it on fire. From that aspect, the GOP looks nearly as bleak as the Democrats.
Well, I thought there was a general consensus across Substacks sharing the sensibilities of this one that we've got a Uniparty that strangles in the womb any candidate attempting to break for unpolluted territory.
I was enough of a moron to have voted twice for Bernie in the primaries, and he's proven as much a shill for the fetid swamp as any of 'em. Of course, joke's on me for thinking a "socialist" was a sensible choice under any circumstances.
I've said before somewhere, and will again, that the most important elections are at the micro-local level because they are the beginning of the journey for anyone really determined to have any sort of future in politics. The trick is to find, support and protect from smears and fake scandals genuinely independent candidates, starting with school boards, and ensure they can build a meaningful political resume so they needn't prostitute themselves to either party. This is a generation's work. Take your vitamins, guys.
Yeah, the one good thing about most Republicans is that they aren’t as bad as most Democrats. That’s pretty faint praise though. The appeal of Trump, despite his warts, is that he stood up to the uni- party. The uni-party played him for sure. But at least he fought them. As much as I like DeSantis, Paul and Noem. I think, like it or not, the nomination will go to Trump if he wants it.
