I flew in '22 and had NO IDEA that there was such a thing as real ID. However, here in S. Dakota, they required the usual (including utility bills) but they also wanted documentation of any other name that I had. This was at least '05 (we moved here in '04). My only anger was that they should have told me when I called so that I would have everything the first time. WTH if that's not REAL ID what the hell is? So, I looked at my driver's license and I have the gold star. S. Dakota was ahead of its time. I HAZ IT. Real ID.
Haven't flown since 2019 i think, because 2020 they started to first demand the face diaper and after that the mRNA poison jabs, no thanks.
Now it probably is possible to fly again without all that but as they seemed to want to take me aside nearly every time between 2015 and 2019 to inspect and scan my belt and shoes for some reason and ask stupid questions, i'd rather just drive, even if it takes days.
Or rent a private aircraft, if there is some urgency, i hear they don't cost all that much if you just take the economical slow and small plane and naturally not the ultra-rich business jet. No kind of checking there for anything. Just board the craft with whatever you want.

I'll let them scan the insurance card, as there is a legitimate reason for that, but otherwise I select the "driver does not have a license" option.

Most people I know here in FL have the star on their DL. I used to just renew my DL online. Then in 2008 or 2009 it told me I couldn’t do it online. Figured it’s because my photo was me from a decade ago when I was 16 or so. Had to go to the DMV with two forms of ID. I guess most people had a similar experience since then. Back then I didn’t know about Real ID or any of that or if it was possible to opt out.
Side note. You can now renew your passport online, and the process was really easy and quick.

What ever happened to enforcing “Social Security Verification” when hiring people? This would have prevented the use of cartel documents as well as the fraudulent use of someone’s SS number. Most illegals in this country have 2 names, the cartel given docs and their real birth documents.

And don't feel too bad about it taking so long to implement. Our government took over ten years to create new passports that are too difficult to forge for anyone to bother. The old ones (that we used up until ca 2005 or so), you could forge using a Xerox-machine.
Here's an anecdote from back in the day:
The old passports were so bad, they didn't count as ID. Not even at the Royal Post Offices. Certainly no bank would accept it. You needed a special laminated ID-card with a holographic stamp, printed on special hard-to-forge paper to do business.
However, to get your ID-card, you needed to show proper ID when collecting it from the police. But how to do that without an ID-card, since the passport was invalid as ID?
You had to bring someone else in to vouch-safe that you was you.
Loopholes so big you could fly a Hercules through them.
I have a passport, fly alot and just got a real ID for my CA drivers license when first offered. No big deal, just another entry into my NSA malcontent file. It doesn't contribute to security but it gets you through TSA which is nothing if not performance theater. I remember reading that the scanners miss 85% of the test guns and knives run through the system. The best airline security is the passengers who after 9/11 will no longer sit in fear and allow terrorists to attempt a hijacking. God bless the brave people who were on UA93.

I'm old enough to remember the first first class flight my husband & I went on on TWA!! We were on the tarmac for about an hour and were served Moet et Chandon and appetizers the whole time. Talk about a class system! In the air the dinner included foie gras frais as one of the appetizers, a rack of veal chops, cooked to whatever degree you wanted them, veggies, etc. A cheese course. Desserts were copious and ended with a sort of sundae Pretty good wines were served throughout. Those WERE the days, my friend. The first class tickets were ours because of the many flights my husband took for business. So, just plain folks getting a taste of what it was like to be "elite".
When SNL was funny, they had a sort of fake commercial that touted "Lowered Expectations". That's what is surely in force today.
I too remember when flying was fun and you dressed up for your flight! Now it's a complete nightmare. If you don't have the good fortune to fly Business or First you are wedged into a tiny space with surly flight attendants who could care less if you enjoy your experience. I never thought I would say this, but I have completely lost my interest in traveling if I have to fly! The new ID complication is just one more inconvenience (not to mention all the recent safety concerns). I'm enjoying my garden these days.

When I went to renew however many years ago that was (8 or 9) New Mexico (near the top in all things bad, at or near the bottom in anything good) demanded that you had to bring a birth certificate, marriage certificate, utility bill, and I can't remember what else. Otherwise you would not get a driver's license renewal. So, there I am, good to go. I wish I knew where. Probably some people could suggest where I could go. haha
